Veterans Day Gravestones Ceremony
Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia
November 11, 2023
Seventeen members of the 69th Pa “Irish Volunteers” attended the annual Veterans Day Cemetery activity this year. The selected location was the Laurel Hill Cemetery along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The highlight of the ceremonies was the honoring of the man who first commanded the 69th Pa in it’s 3 month form as the 24th Pa. Joshua Thomas Owen was a Philadelphia lawyer of Welsh origin who volunteered to organize the first Irish Regiment in the Philadelphia area.
In usual 69th style, the participants marched to the gravesites and heard a brief biography of each man followed by religious rites, placement of “Irish soil” on the grave and a volley of musket fire. Beautiful weather greeted the participants as they drove to the highest point in the cemetery for services.
