Memorial Day Gravestones Ceremony at Philadelphia Cemetery
May 27, 2024

Salute Arms at Each Grave

On Monday, Memorial Day, May 27th, The 69th Pa “Irish Volunteers” visited the Philadelphia National Cemetery in West Oak Lane (Limekiln Pike). There at 10:00 am patriotic music was presented by the regimental band and the graves of four 69th veterans (1861-1865) were honored. For the past 25 years the 69th Pa has successfully researched and acquired gravestones for unmarked graves numbering 114. All were invited to join us for this very special activity. This was the second year we dedicated graves of the 69th fallen.

The Philadelphia National Cemetery is one of the largest Federal cemeteries and holds a number of interned bodies from the Battle of Germantown; 169 from the Mexican-American War as well as 184 Confederate POW’s who died in Union Prisons & hospitals. A total of 13,202 casualties of the wars fought by our nation are found there.

Preparing for Services
Philadelphia National Cemetery Gravestones

For the past 27 years The 69th “Irish Volunteers” have raised the monies needed to pay for the placement of gravestones in cemeteries in the Philadelphia area. These are the “final resting places” of the men who served in the regiment from 1861 to 1865. The stones have mostly been provided by the Veterans Administration with the regiment paying for placement; perpetual care and repair. We have raised and spent almost $70,000 for this project counting various contributions to battlefield restoration. The polices of the Veterans recently permits us to place gravestones on unmarked graves of soldiers who enlisted prior to January 1, 1917. This opens a great number of new opportunities.
